What is OpenPress?

Wheaton College OpenPress is Wheaton College's Pressbooks instance. Pressbooks is one of the go-to online authoring platforms for creating and distributing OER and open textbooks. 

According to their user guide, "Pressbooks is used by independent authors, small and medium-sized publishers, and educational institutions around the world. All book formats are produced using templates that are optimized to look great in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. File exports produced with Pressbooks can be exported and downloaded from Pressbooks and distributed or shared however you like. The advantages of Pressbooks include:

  • A simple, familiar interface
  • Professionally-designed book files, without complex software
  • Unlimited ability to edit, update, and (re)export books
  • Ability to collaborate with other authors and editors
  • A variety of book formats
  • Complete control over your own content"

 

How to access and create in OpenPress @ Wheaton

Getting Started

We recommend participating in an OER or OpenPress focused informational workshop, or meeting with a member of the Wallace Library Research & Instruction team by contacting librarians_research@wheatoncollege.edu for more information.

Here are the steps to request a site on which you can create a new book or clone an existing open book, and access the editing dashboard:

  1. Fill out the OpenPress Site Registration Request Form.
  2. After completing the form, go to openpress.wheatoncollege.edu and click “Sign In” from the header navigation (upper right) menu

  3. Sign in using your Wheaton College email address
  4. You will receive a DUO push
  5. Once you receive the duo push you will land on your OpenPress Dashboard which is where you can create or access your books/projects, change your settings or update your profile.

  6. You can now access your OpenPress dashboard. You will not have access to book editing until the OpenPress administrators have reviewed your form and registered your book site. Administrators will notify you to log in to the OpenPress dashboard and accept the invitation to the book/site. Please allow 24-48 hours for administrators to process your request and notify you.
