Creating Links to Library Resources

So, you've found the perfect article in a library database. You copy the URL in the address bar and add it as a link to your Canvas cite. When your students try to access the article, they get an error message. Gah!

To prevent this from happening, you need to take a few steps to create a URL that is both persistent and proxied.

Persistent Links

Sometimes when you are in an article entry in a database, the URL in the address bar contains temporary information related your activity in the database. Our catalog and most of our databases provide persistent links to their content. Where these links are located and how they are labeled vary. Labels include:

  • Permanent Link
  • Bookmark
  • Copy Link or URL
  • Create Link

You may need to click on a "Share" link to find the permanent link.

Some databases (e.g. Scopus, Web of Science) provide the persistent link in the address bar. We recommend testing any such link in a browser window that you are not signed into to ensure that it will work.

Proxied Links

The Library uses a proxy server to limit access to many of our resources to the Wheaton community in accordance with our licenses. A proxied link may trigger Duo authentication—particularly if you are off campus.

Proxied links begin with https://wheatonma.idm.oclc.org/login?url=.

Most of our resources will add this automatically to their persistent links. Sometimes, however, you will need to add it yourself.

Example

A persistent link from JSTOR looks like this: https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv5vdcvd.10.

The proxied JSTOR link looks like this: https://wheatonma.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://www.jstor.org/stable/j.ctv5vdcvd.10
